Q: What's more valuable, the time of a New York City School Teacher, the time of an LA Escort or a copy of mySQL database?
A: If you hold true the maxim that price reflects value, then the LA Escort is more valuable.
Starting salary for a NYC Teacher, MA or equivelant, 7. 5 years of experience: $55,942. At a 10 month year, working 20 days a month, 6 hours a day the hourly rate is, $46.61.
One hour with an LA escort, $180 (with ad)
mySQL database, version 4.1, free

pleasure over function
anyone that holds true the maxim that price reflects value without exception is naive, sheltered or just a moron.
besides, try telling your parents and family that you're an escort.
Well, try telling your friends and family that you're an SQL database.
Lawyers are more expensive still.
It makes sense to compare the value and rates of people performing services; it makes less sense to compare rates with product prices as well. I suppose in some sense MySQL confers the most "value" on the economy, but it's the least warm and cuddly. What if the NYC schoolteacher also escorts? ;)
[update] I think I'lldowngrade the value of MySQL:
MySQL worm hits Windows systems
A worm that takes advantage of administrators' poor password choices has started spreading among database systems.

EXCERPT:
>>
The malicious program, known as the "MySQL bot" or by the name of its executable code, SpoolCLL, infects computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system and open-source database known as MySQL, the Internet Storm Center said in an advisory published Thursday. Early indications suggest that more than 8,000 computers may be infected so far, said the group, which monitors network threats.
The worm gets initial access to a database machine by guessing the password of the system administrator, using common passwords. It then uses a flaw in MySQL to run another type of program, known as bot software, which then takes full control of the system.
